How to Clean Wooden Furniture to Make it Look New

There’s a good reason why wooden furniture has lasted for so long. A well-made choice, especially one with a solid construction, will last a long time and look excellent for years to come. Of course, if you want your favourite pieces of wood furniture to last a long time, you’ll need to learn how to clean wood furniture properly.

When cleaning wood, keep it simple even if it seems like a more involved process. Whenever you’re shopping for wood furniture, it’s a good idea to inquire about maintenance instructions from the seller. There is no foolproof method of cleaning wood because there are so many different types of wood, finishes, and stains. But as a rule of thumb, it’s best to begin with the gentlest cleaning products and work your way up. Also, before using a new cleaning product on a whole table or chair, you should always give it a try on a small, hidden area first.

The Typical Way We Do It

Read on for our suggested low-intensity cleaning and protection procedure for numerous types of wood furnishings.

Materials Required

  • Using microfiber rags
  • Calming dishwashing liquid
  • Optional mineral spirits
  • An alternative semi-solid polish for your furniture
  • There is the option of using cheesecloth.

Procedures

  • Remove dust and filth from your wooden furniture by wiping it down with a slightly moist microfiber cloth. The wood should never be allowed to become saturated with water. Therefore, always use a dry microfiber cloth to remove any moisture. Quickly wiping something down with a microfiber cloth will do the work for routine dusting.
  • A drop of dish soap on a microfiber cloth can be used to safely remove sticky residue from wood furniture; first test on a small, hidden area of the piece to ensure the finish doesn’t come off. In such a case, mix a few drops of dish soap into a cup of water and work gently into the sticky area. Don’t let the wood become too wet again. Clean the area and then dry it with a second microfiber towel.
  • It’s possible that mineral spirits will be required under more dire circumstances. First, make sure it won’t ruin the finish by trying it out on a hidden area. Use a dab of mineral spirits on a clean cloth and massage down the sticky area while working in a well-ventilated location. And what if that doesn’t work either? You should think about refinishing the item.
  • Using wax on your wood furniture can help preserve its finish and prevent it from spills and scratches. Apply semi-solid wax (without silicone) to the wood surfaces using cheesecloth. After a few minutes, buff the wax paste into the wood with a clean microfiber cloth. Spray-on polishes can leave a sticky residue and should be avoided. If you decide to use wax, study the packaging well before applying it.
